Dr. Karen Loerke has been an educator for over 30 years. She received her PhD in 2012 from the University of Alberta with a focus in Literacy and Language Acquisition. Prior to joining Edmonton Regional Learning Consortium, she worked as a consultant with Edmonton Public Schools. Karen has taught in diverse classrooms from K-12, including special education settings and inclusive classrooms. Currently Karen teaches English Language Arts in the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta alongside her work as the ERLC Implementation Support Consultant focusing on literacy.

K-3, 7-9In this interactive workshop you will learn the principles for designing, assessing, and managing book clubs that will engage learners in authentic tasks where students learn to negotiate, think critically, and work cooperatively with others - competencies of a 21st century learner. This session will highlight strategies and ideas for building purposeful discussion groups, and tips and criteria to help students write insightful responses. In this unique approach to reading, no roles are used. Instead students learn to pre-arrange and manage their own reading schedules and build capacity as self-regulated learners.
