What are the best ways to teach students the traits of effective writing? When isolated but well-meaning individual lessons about voice, sentence fluency, and organization don't seem to carry over into students’ daily writing, consider teaching the traits of quality writing within a specific genre of writing over time.

Consider these pairings: personal narratives and voice; free verse poetry and word choice; informational writing and organization; story writing and sentence fluency.

Join us as we paint a picture of the qualities of effective writing at work in the “All About…” or informational writing workshop. We’ll share genre lesson plans, student writing samples, and connections to Program of Studies outcomes. We’ll model writing workshop approaches that infuse the language of quality writing with lifelong strategies used by published authors and our young, developing writers of today.

In this interactive session, you will review authentic writing samples in order to help young writers develop their craft. Be sure to bring a collection of student writing.

This workshop will blend the work of Calkins, Anderson, Spandel, Culham, Fletcher, Portalupi, and Atwell.
