Are you using models in your class for teaching numeracy, and if so, are you using them to their full
potential? We will start by examining the theory behind models, including the work of Jerome Bruner,
and then focus on models you can use in your classroom, starting at the kindergarten level. We will focus
on ten-frames, number lines, arrays, and bead strings.
*If you have a bead string, cuisenaire rods set, and/or rekenrek, please feel free to bring it to this session.
If you do not have one, virtual options will be provided.
Why is this session relevant to teachers?
Why this is an important session: It explores the important tool of modeling in the teaching of
numeracy concepts.
What will be the learning: The importance of using models, key models that can be used, and how to
use them.
Focus: Basic numeracy concepts.
Takeaway: Teachers will have a better understanding of why and how to use models in their classroom.
