A strong understanding of place value helps us think of numbers in different ways and this is helpful when operating and computing with numbers. There is some math that we do not want our students to resort to algorithms. We want them to think about the numbers and have confidence in mental math using easy and fun strategies. Students should be supported in developing a rich, meaningful understanding of how the operations work in order to support their skills in working flexibly with numbers. We need to provide them with opportunities to compare strategies and contexts, exploring situations when particular strategies are efficient and when they are not as efficient. Join Ulana as she provides you with many useful teaching strategies you can use with your students to build flexible additive thinking with larger whole and decimal numbers. We will explore conceptual and algorithmic models of whole number and decimal addition and subtraction.
