A strong understanding of place value helps us think of numbers in different ways and this is helpful when operating and computing with numbers. In this session Ulana will help you with strategies to use when teaching your students to multiply and divide whole and decimal numbers. She believes that we should spend our time on strategies that can be used on all whole and decimal numbers, not just some! Let’s also stop teaching some rules that actually expire in higher grades. Strategies need to be efficient, flexible and generalizable. Avoid instruction focused on teaching a single correct approach to arrive at a single correct answer.
We will explore conceptual and algorithmic models of whole number and decimal multiplication.
