By the time students are entering Grade 7, they are fairly well accustomed to the routines of the first days of school. Granted, those entering junior high and high school for the first time may feel a bit anxious, but many have their pockets of friends or have been through a school orientation in the language they know.
For students who are from a non-English speaking country though, entering the Canadian school system for the first time can be very overwhelming. Many have left their friends behind and were part of a school system much different than here. Where can educators begin to ensure beginning proficiency English as an Additional Language students feel welcome and part of school communities?
This two-hour session will address how teachers and schools can welcome secondary students new to English and Canada.
