The science of reading is a vast body of empirical research about how reading develops, why some students struggle with reading, and the assessment and instruction that is likely to lead to strong reading outcomes for all students. This series will equip participants with knowledge of key aspects of the reading research, strategies for sharing research with other educators, and a framework for implementing the science of reading so that more students become skilled readers.

Objectives:

  • This session will provide the structures of WHY, WHAT, HOW, WHEN & WHERE
  • Background information on the science of reading
  • Strategies for sharing research with other educators
  • A framework for implementing the science of reading so more students become skilled readers
  • Guidance for implementing structured literacy practices in the K-3 Curriculum

Next Steps Part 1: Teaching Word Recognition

Objectives

  • Demonstrate understanding of the essential nature of phonemic awareness, phonics, and spelling
  • Explore research-based, speech-to-print methods of teaching phonemic awareness, phonics and spelling
  • Learn an instructional routine for integrating instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics and spelling

Participants can take one session, or any combination of sessions.
