Language learning is not just about learning vocabulary words and grammar, but knowing and using the nuances of spoken and written communication effectively in a wide variety of ways. In linguistics, discourse refers to a unit of language longer than a single sentence, but can look and sound different depending on the background and experiences of the person producing spoken language or written text. Multilingual students may make great gains initially in discourse, but seem to struggle when faced with academic discourse.
This session will look at what discourse is and areas where scaffolding can be used to support linguistically and culturally diverse students as they work towards becoming proficient in the language of school. Researched based strategies will be shared that participants can put into practice for their next lesson.
