Each of us has four vocabularies: Words we understand when we hear them, words we can read, words we use in our speech, and words we use in our writing. We can also look at vocabulary as single words and phrases, or chunks of words. These two perspectives reveal that vocabulary in any language is a complex issue.
But how do we determine which sets of vocabulary to focus on when supporting language development for multilingual students?
This interactive session will highlight instructional strategies in the area of vocabulary development for multilingual students by uncovering some of the myths around second language vocabulary and looking at the research behind effective practices that support vocabulary development.
