AllUntil recently, many educators believed that teachers could empower students to become proficient problem solvers simply by teaching them strategies and giving them many opportunities to engage with rich problems. However, new research in the science of learning has shown that students are unlikely to become strong problem solvers in any subject if they lack foundational knowledge of essential facts and concepts that are specific to that subject. In math, this foundational knowledge includes knowledge of number facts and the ability to perform computations and do mental math. In this webinar John Mighton will explain how JUMP Math lessons use games and pattern-based activities to help students learn number facts in a fun and effective way. He will also present mental math exercises and explorations that help students develop a deep sense of the relationships between numbers and employ a variety of strategies to do calculations and solve problems.
