This session is to address the needs that have been found by the assessments completed for Alberta Education.

Building a strong foundation in Number is critical for student success in Mathematics.  In this session you will be introduced to effective practices and tools one can use to build that foundation needed in developing Number sense.

Fluency in mathematics means more than fast and accurate recall of facts. Yes, students must know their facts from memory, but learning them by memorization is not helpful. Memorization should be the result of understanding not at the cost of understanding.  Fluency is much more than facts and algorithms.   Being fluent means moving beyond basic facts to using reasoning and creativity with larger whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.  In order to minimize inefficient counting strategies, this session will explore 3 strategies, ways of using manipulatives to develop deeper understanding, and strategies for moving from concrete to abstract representations.   We will focus on building conceptual understanding, reasonableness, and flexibility with our facts. As a result we will enable our students on this road called fluency.

All learning opportunities with the ERLC regional team will focus on the Alberta Education and district priority areas.
