Literacy is the ability, confidence, and willingness to engage with language to acquire, construct, and communicate meaning (Alberta Education, 2015). Discipline, however, has a variety of meanings. This session will focus on discipline being a branch of knowledge or subject area. Each discipline has different requirements for engaging with language. The language needed to interact with concepts in Math is very different from the language students need to understand the ideas in Phys. Ed., the Fine Arts, Science, or CTS courses.
This session will provide a look into the language and practices students need in order to be successful in disciplines other than English Language Arts. A variety of ready-to-use strategies will be shared that will help students engage with language in different subject areas.

All learning opportunities with the ERLC regional team will focus on the Alberta Education and district priority areas.
