Have you ever heard students say "I forget doing that"? Far too often, instruction prioritizes short-term performance at the expense of learning. Making Math Stick is about instructional and learning strategies that support students in recalling and applying previous learning to solve novel situations. In this session, I'll stress a broader view of learning that is more than getting information into heads of students. It's about encoding, consolidating and retrieval. Students will be able to recall previous learning to solve novel problems. Instruction and learning is mixed and spaced during the year.
January 18, 2022, Session 1: It is important that we broaden our view of learning so that we support our students as independent learners. An overview of a retrieval practice approach to instruction and learning will be provided so that educators are aware of effective, yet manageable and sustainable, strategies that support student understanding and retention of concepts.
January 19, 2022, Session 2: This session will dig deeper into retrieval practice and will highlight instructional strategies that could be incorporated into classroom routines for all curricular concepts. Instructional strategies will be shared so that participants have an understanding of the purpose, application and points for differentiation. Within this sharing, samples will be examined so that educators can appreciate how to apply it in their classroom. Multiple classroom connections will be made.
January 27, 2022, Session 3: This session will dig deeper into retrieval practice and will highlight learning strategies that could be incorporated into classroom routines for all curricular concepts. Learning strategies will be shared so that participants have an understanding of the purpose, application and how metacognition can be supported. Within this sharing, work samples will be examined so that educators can appreciate how to apply it in their classroom and how students can take an independent stance in their learning. Multiple classroom connections will be made.
