According to Statistics Canada, almost 25% of Albertans speak languages other than English. The members of this diverse demographic bring new stories which may be quite different than the established narrative due to their experiences and backgrounds. Culturally responsive teaching allows for these stories to be heard and used to create a new narrative, helping students discover the important role they can play in the larger societal structure.

This session will explore parts of Zaretta Hammond's Ready for Rigor framework to guide participants in creating more equitable, affirming and culturally responsive communities for learning. Participants will be asked to reflect on their understandings of culture and bias as they gain an understanding of how the brain uses culture to make sense of the world.

All learning opportunities with the ERLC regional team will focus on the Alberta Education and district priority areas.
