Language Arts teachers know it is more important to enable readers and writers to think for themselves and to actively build their own conceptual understanding than to merely fill their heads with the "right" answers to chapter questions. In fact, students of the language arts are in an ongoing dialogue with ”texts” of all kinds--their own, and that of other writers. It is in meeting them where they are in this vital work that we create those essential conditions and learning experiences that help our students develop the skills and independence as readers and writers, within and beyond our classrooms.

Learning Intentions:

Reading “Well” is not Enough

We will be  learning about the ways we might:

  • create the inclusive conditions that enable readers to  develop agency over their independent reading lives.
  • reframe independent reading to include daily reading, talk, conferring.
  • consider our choice of “core” and book club texts to reflect and recognize the crucial identity work that enters the classroom with each and every one of our readers.

All learning opportunities with the ERLC regional team will focus on the Alberta Education and district priority areas.
