This series of three sessions will address what comes after the Alberta Education Numeracy Assessment in Grade Two and Grade Three.

These sessions will focus on specific tasks and strategies to help the classroom teacher address number knowledge and relations based on their data from the Numeracy Assessment. Participants will have opportunities to share ideas, resources, and strategies in a collaborative and informal setting.

November 29, 2021:  Session 1-  Number Knowledge

Conceptual understanding of numbers is fundamental and students need multiple opportunities to engage in open-ended counting activities to deepen their number sense. In this session you will be introduced to daily routines and activities for counting that will build student’s knowledge of the number system, including comparing and ordering numbers.

January 24, 2022:  Session 2 - Building Fact Fluency

Mastering the basic facts for addition and subtraction is an essential goal for all students, but it’s more than flashcards and timed drills. Students need to understand that fluency is about accuracy, efficiency and flexibility in the use of appropriate strategies. This session will focus on activities, fluency routines (Number Talks) and games that can support the building of fluency skills and help students to become confident and successful mathematicians.

February 23, 2021:  Session 3: The Power of the Open Number Line

An open number line is a visual model to support students in understanding the relationship between numbers and their values. This session will focus on strategies and ways this powerful visual model can be used to build student’s understanding and thinking.
